Rose Hickman Smith is the Founder and Managing Partner of StrategyIP and practices in all aspects of Intellectual Property, including prosecution, litigation, counseling, and opinion work involving trademarks, patents, domain names, copyrights, rights of publicity, and trade secrets.
Rose has helped her clients secure and enforce monopolies on their ideas and protect the goodwill of their brand names for fifteen years, and has been recognized as a top Intellectual Property attorney by numerous sources. These honors include receiving a perfect 10/10 rating from AVVO, being listed in Los Angeles Magazine as one of the "Top Women Lawyers in Southern California," Coast Magazine as a "Top Attorney in Intellectual Property," OC Register Metro as a "Top Attorney in Patent Applications," and a "Lawyer of Distinction" in California, an honor reserved for the top 10% of attorneys in the state. Super Lawyer Magazine named Rose a Southern California "Rising Star" in 2004 (inaugural year), 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012, an honor reserved for the top 2.5% of attorneys under 40 in the region. She has also been listed in Who's Who in American Women, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in American Law.
In her patent work, Rose has handled a wide range of technologies, such as software, integrated circuits, fuel cells, flat panel displays, interplanetary rovers, medical devices, complex mechanical systems, and computer implemented business methods. She has a B.S. in Physics from the College of William and Mary, and worked in satellite technology/remote sensing at NASA Langley and Georgia Institute of Technology before attending law school at the University of Southern California.
In her trademark work, Rose has helped clients from individual startups to international corporations secure and enforce their trademark rights from initial trademark selection to litigation. She has also advised and advocated for her clients on domain name issues, such as selection, transfer, and enforcement.
Ms. Hickman Smith has had the honor of serving on the Executive Committees of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Entertainment and Intellectual Property Section and Barristers Section, where she also served as Vice President. She served in the leadership of the International Trademark Association (INTA) as a Member of the Bulletin Committee, Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee, Pro Bono Committee, and the Law Firm Committee.
Prior to forming StrategyIP, Rose was a Partner at Karish & Bjorgum PC, and an associate for Hogan & Hartson LLP and Christie, Parker & Hale, LLP. Prior to that, Rose was a summer associate at Pretty Schroeder & Poplawski and a law clerk at Blakely, Sokoloff, Taylor & Zafman. Rose also served as a Judicial Extern for The Honorable Mitchell R. Goldberg.
